I never cheated/plagiarized in my classes. Despite my slacker-attitude in college, I felt that if I were to graduate (by some miracle) that it would be by my own merits. If I were to cheat, wouldn’t that invalidate all my efforts to that point?
Recently, a UCSB student by the name of Nancy Ramirez was arrested for breaking into the school’s grading system to change her (among others) grades. I can understand that the pressures of graduation can lead to some pretty dire actions but come on now.
What is ironic about this situation is that Ms. Ramirez’ expenditure of time and resources must have at least equaled that of studying for her classes. In addition, the stress generated from the breaking into the system and her arrest must be far greater than any college class.
I’m not writing this to point out that I’ve taken the high-road; on contrary, I have slacked off with the best of them. I just think that better options exist that do not involve cheating and felonies.
